JAKARTA: Malaysia got off to a winning start in the fourth Asian Football Confederation’s futsal (five-a-side) tournament yesterday, edging Taiwan 7-6 in a Group B match at the Istora Senayan Stadium here. Coach Bahwandi Hiralal said that his boys were lucky to survive the late Taiwanese onslaught. “We just kept giving away the goals. The Taiwanese fought until the final whistle and even managed to score in the final seconds of the game. It was a close shave for us” said Bahwandi. Malaysia will play against Uzbekistan today. The Uzbeks were beaten 0-5 by defending champions Iran in their opening match. Malaysia’s last group fixture is against Iran tomorrow. The other team in the group, Turkmenistan, have withdrawn. Group A: South Korea 5 Bahrain 5, Brunei 1 Thailand 14. Group B: Iran 5 Uzbekistan 0, Malaysia 7 Taiwan 6. |
