RFK Likely to Host Iran-Guatemala on May 1

Washingtonpost - The U.S. Soccer Federation, which oversees all international matches proposed to be played in American stadiums, has given its approval to the match, a federation spokesman confirmed yesterday. 

Soccer officials in Washington, who are also involved in the planning, said final details are being worked out between the D.C. Sports and Entertainment Commission, the Iranian soccer federation and the U.S. Department of State. 

The Iranians will also play MLS's Los Angeles Galaxy on April 28 at Home Depot Center in Carson, Calif., the Galaxy confirmed. 

Iran, which played a historic game against the U.S. national team at the 1998 World Cup in France, last toured the United States four years ago. 

It tied the Americans, 1-1, in Pasadena, Calif.; defeated Ecuador, 2-1, in Los Angeles; and lost to Mexico, 2-1, in Oakland, Calif. 

Meantime, the prospects of famed English club Liverpool playing in Washington this summer appear to have dimmed. Liverpool had been tentatively scheduled to play Inter Milan at RFK in late July, but the Italian club withdrew just before the official announcement was to be made a few weeks ago. 

The promoters, ChampionsWorld, had hoped to line up a replacement, most likely Portuguese club Porto, but that matchup could end up being played at Gillette Stadium in Foxboro, Mass.
